Jose Courrau

Dr. Jose Courrau is a Costa Rican professional specialized in nature conservation and more specifically, protected areas. Dr. Courrau started his professional career as a protected area manager in the Costa Rican National Park Service. After obtaining his graduate degrees, Dr. Courrau worked as protected area specialist for a regional project providing technical support to the 7 Central American countries. After the end of that project, he became a private consultant and worked for the major conservation NGOs (WWF, Conservation International, IUCN, etc). Dr. Courrau additionally lived in Australia where he worked for the University of Queensland initiating the global study on protected areas management effectiveness. More recently he became the senior protected areas specialist for The Nature Conservancy where he provides technical knowledge and expertise to support countries in the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity’s Program of Work on Protected Areas, among other things. Dr. Courrau specializes in protected area planning, management, management effectiveness and nature tourism, both at the site and system level.
